"The Kirsch Amazing Race" by Maxine Harris
Our first stop was at a huge game place called Dave & Busters. We were to “find someone you know” which was Melinda, and we were given tokens or a credit card to swipe in the game of our choice in order to begin. Our group had 8 adults and 5 children. Everyone played various games and earned a lot of tickets. We spent about half an hour playing games before leaving for our second challenge.
Next. we were taken to a large shopping mall to a “Bass Pro Shop.” Our assignment in this store was to have a few members of our group pose for a photo beside the “grizzly bear.” There were several bears on display around the store. The first bear we found was a Kodiak bear – wrong bear. Someone in our group knew that the grizzly bear was on the second floor, so off we went to find the grizzly. We learned later that one of the other groups took a picture by the Kodiak bear and had to go find the grizzly and re-take the photo, at a loss of some time. Also, we were to take a photo of a few members of our group inside a boat and holding a fishing pole. Our “someone you know” at this location was Jill who verified that we had taken the pictures with digital cameras. After we did this, we could earn extra “bonus” points if members of our group climbed the “climbing wall.” Three people accomplished this task –the younger people of course, one being a team member who earned us extra points. Thanks, Lori Ellinger!
Our next assignment was to go to The Home Depot and go shopping! Can you imagine a long stretch limo in The Home Depot parking lot! Of course, we needed a picture of that! I was the “official” picture taker for our group. By this time, my husband Bill had had enough of trying to keep up with the younger folks and climbing in and out of the limo. Since he was recovering from back surgery, we decided to ask the driver if he could ride up front with her. She said ok and for the remainder of the afternoon, Bill took it easy by “riding shotgun.”

At The Home Depot we were assigned the task of locating two specific items, getting the identifying numbers and the prices and making a phone call to one of the committee members to verify that we found the correct items before moving on. The items to be found were a kitchen faucet and a bag of potting soil. I’m sure the people at the customer service desk must have thought we were nuts! I found out later that these stores are familiar with the sort of mission we were on, because other groups also visit, evidently on a fairly regular basis.
After that, we were on our way to the Fairfield Bowling Lanes. We did some bowling, but the rules had changed. The children were on one lane and the adults on another. Everyone lined up and took one turn throwing the ball, then went to the end of the line to wait for another turn. Once the children’s team reached a total of 75 points and the adults reached a total of 300 points, we were finished. Our “someone you know” at this location was Dave who informed us that our group did some BAD bowling, but we had fun nevertheless! We never made the 300 points because we ran out of time and the next group was merging in.
Next stop was Jungle Jim’s Market. This huge grocery store is the only one of it’s kind in the area. Included in the many items for sale are lots of specialty and international items. This store was recently profiled on “Good Morning America.” Our assignment was to go to the soup aisle and find the “Flashing Princess.” Well, the Flashing Princess was the other committee member, Bev, who had a flashing tierra on her head. She gave us shopping instructions. We were to find food items with names beginning with K-I-R-S-C-H and we had $6.00 to spend. For “K” we bought Kool-Aid, for “I” we bought a bag of ice, for “R” we bought Ramen Noodles, for “S” we bought a can of soup, for “C” we bought potato chips, and for “H” we bought hot dogs. At the checkout, we had the choice to go for bonus points, so we were given $4.00 more and were told to go to the Mexican aisle and purchase items with names beginning with R-A-C-E. We bought refried beans for the “R”, a package of spice with name beginning with “A”, for “C” we bought cookies, and for “E” we bought enchilada sauce. Our purchases had to be verified by the Flashing Princess.

As we were traveling between the different locations, there was “work” we did along the way. We had a “word search” puzzle which included every team member’s first and last names. Another game listed some of our client’s names with the letters scrambled and clues at the bottom of the page. Rinda and I were the pros on this one. On another paper, several items were listed for the children to watch for around the countryside such as barns, bicycles, ponds, etc. Everyone was busy completing these chores, as well as eating snacks and having drinks.
The limo took us back to the park for our last event and our team was the first to arrive, which was a good indication that we might WIN. There was a beautiful large grassy area where 28 plastic eggs had been hidden. Inside each egg was a picture of one of our employees or a member of their family. We had to find three matches. I found an egg with my boss’ picture in it and someone else found an egg with his daughter’s picture in it and that was a match. With 13 people doing this, it didn’t take long to complete this task.
Our team joined together for a group picture at the end. The three teams gathered inside the clubhouse for a delicious catered dinner. All three teams’ points and time were calculated and guess what – our team “The Scarlet Sprinters” was the winner! For the four families involved, each got a gift basket filled with cookies, plus a $25 gift certificate to a local restaurant. What a fun-filled and memorable day for at least 37 people!
